Spotlight: Ted Reiterman MPAc 16
Audit and Assurance In Charge, Deloitte
Why the UC Davis Graduate School of Management?
I graduated 2011 and entered Teach for America, and I was teaching high school Spanish in Kentucky, came back, and I wanted to go ahead and pursue accounting, and so I started looking into the UC Davis Master of Professional Accountancy program.
I thought the timing of it was right. I knew accounting was kind of the skill I wanted to get out of it. It was a very targeted program and I thought it was a good fit for me.
How do you collaborate at work to make an impact?
I just took a new position in the EIC, which is the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Club, as the director of entrepreneurship and collaboration. We are trying to plan new activities for the next year. We are actually focusing on this collaborative leadership theme.
What does collaborative leadership mean to you?
On a daily basis, I'm working with other people. Part of that is knowing what I'm really good at and then leveraging what that person is really good at, and talking on a regular basis to figure out, how are we gonna make sure that this project that we're on, is successful.
What are some highlights in your career in the last few years?
Some things that I've gotten involved in, are like community activities. We do an Impact day every year at Deloitte and everyone just stop working for the day and we just focus on doing community volunteer work. So, I've gotten to help lead that, which is very important to me because I used to teach, you know. Education and youth causes are really important to me.
What are the biggest challenges in your industry?
The various industries that I work in and the various clients that I have are constantly changing. So, making sure that you have the tools needed to effectively provide services to your clients, that's really important.
Is there a professor that stands out to you and why?
Professor Snyder, obviously, he kind of talked to me and encouraged me to do the program, was really happy about that decision. And Professor Yetman always made me feel, he was always a champion for his students.
How did the UC Davis MPAc program help launch your career?
Well, it got me a job, for sure. It brought in recruiters from different firms, helped me learn how to polish myself and to be a good interview candidate.
What should future MPAc graduates be aware of as they start their careers?
Have a good mentor. I think the MPAc program has tons of great mentors, people that will go out of their way to, you know, go to bat for you, and you know, that obviously carries over into, you know, professional career as well.
